How to Avoid Booth Staff Duds

13 essential questions to consider well before the event

by Susan A. Friedmann, The Tradeshow Coach

Booth staff selection is the single most important factor in your exhibiting success. More than graphics, signage, literature, giveaways or any other variable, the people you put on the show floor influence each visitor’s opinion of your organization. They are your ambassadors, representing your company for the whole world to see.

It is impossible to stress enough how crucial your team is to your overall success. To ensure a top-notch performance, begin to prepare your booth team four to six months prior to the event. Read more ...

Exhibit booth staffing ... Chronic complaining ... Cookie vendors

Hello. I'm Rob Murphy, chief marketing officer for MC² wishing you a peaceful holiday season and success in the coming year.

We've seen organizations invest significantly in traffic-stopping exhibits, produce high-quality continuous-loop videos -- even offer prizes to visitors for sinking long putts. But that can all fall flat if the people staffing the booth can't "connect" with visitors, don't speak their language or stumble over the simplest questions. In this month's feature article, trade show guru Susan Friedmann shares 13 questions to ask prior to selecting and training your team -- and explains why planning is critical to success.

Last month, a reader asked how to handle a co-worker who isn't happy unless he's complaining to you about something. Our readers offer some great advice. This month, a puzzled planner wants help with a ticklish problem: How to handle appeals for one worthy cause after another -- from cookie sales to 10K runs -- that seem to drain away staff productivity. What can you do without turning into Mr. Scrooge?

Respond to this dilemma or take our one-minute survey and we'll enter your name into a drawing for a gift certificate for a dinner for two. Congratulations to Terri Prince, senior exhibits planner at KCI, for being this quarter's winner!

What’s Your Best Advice?

Last Issue's Dilemma:

How do I cut down on my 'whine' consumption?

I have a co-worker who complains to me about everything that happens to him here at work. I'm a good listener, but his negative attitude is starting to affect how I feel about our company. Should I tell him he's complaining too much, be supportive and let him vent, or what?

-- Barry, Conference and Event Coordinator

This Issue's Dilemma:

Help! I'm being harassed by cookie vendors

I run an event planning firm in the Pacific Northwest, and something has been bugging me. I want our staff to focus on getting new clients, keeping the current ones happy and staying productive. But every time I turn around, someone in the office is selling cookies for Scouts or lining up sponsors for some charitable 10K run. These are worthy causes, but I have a business to run. Should I just put up with the solicitation or draw the line? If I put a stop to it entirely, what will that do to morale? -- Pestered president in Oregon
