Simple ways to boost exhibit visitation and stamina

by E. Jane Lorimer, Managing Director for Lorimer Consulting Group

Many of you are familiar with the "sick building syndrome," those buildings with bad air problems. The toxins responsible for bad air cause respiratory complaints and fatigue and have been known to significantly affect energy levels and worker productivity.

The materials used in new exhibit construction can produce the same troublesome toxins.

For instance, formaldehyde is produced by particleboard, pressed wood products, fire retardant and adhesive wood binders in floor coverings. Benzene is a chemical found in inks, oils, plastics, rubber, dyes, tobacco smoke and synthetic fibers. And trichloroethylene (TCE) is found in metal degreasing agents, dry-cleaned fabrics, printing inks, lacquers, varnishes and adhesives. Read more >>

Healthy exhibit investments … A disconnected boss … Event ROI

Hello. I'm Rob Murphy, chief marketing officer for MC².

Many companies spend thousands of dollars each year putting razzle-dazzle into their exhibits. But you can draw in visitors, keep them hanging around longer and make your space a healthier place for a fraction of the cost. E. Jane Lorimer, managing director for Lorimer Consulting Group, explains how in this month's feature article on green plants and aromas.

Whenever you try to talk to your boss, you see his eyes glaze over and you know you've lost him. What should you do? Our readers provide insightful suggestions. Nowadays, more exhibit and event professionals are being asked to prove the ROI of participating in events. How do you measure your success? A reader would like to know.

Although we normally don't recommend books, here's one that may inspire you. If you've ever come up with a great idea and had trouble getting people to listen to you, check out How to Get Your Ideas Adopted (and Change the World) by engineer, innovator and inventor Anne Miller. And if you missed her article Cat-herding -- The art of managing creative people, which appeared in our May issue, it definitely warrants a read.

Respond to this month's dilemma or take our one-minute survey, and we'll enter your name into a drawing for a $200 gift certificate for a dinner for two.

What’s Your Best Advice?

Last Issue's Dilemma:

Last Issue's Dilemma
Hello, hello, hello. Is anybody in there?

My boss has a short attention span, and when we have one-on-ones or team meetings, he tunes out within a few minutes. I've tried summing up thoughts, questions and ideas to keep them short, but that really hasn't helped. Should I bang on the table, talk louder, stand up? How do your readers reach out to people who zone out at the drop of a hat?

-- Anita, Exhibit Manager        See what our readers have to say.

What's the measure of your success?

Upper management is pressuring our department to prove ROI for the shows we've participated in so far this year. Would any of you share the metrics you use to demonstrate value? Also, what measurements are hot buttons with your bosses? With attendance down, I'd hate to lose our budget line for want of statistics that support our program. -- Lacy, Marketing Events Manager
