Fishing for High-caliber Attendees

And the lures that "reel" them in

by Scott Williams, MC² Chicago Division President

TGFA! (Thank Goodness for Associations!) Associations are here to represent the needs of our industries and professions. They monitor, promote and lobby for issues that benefit our industries. And they seek to influence key opinion leaders in policy and industries.

Each year, most associations host a conference and trade fair, and attendee members are a qualified and important audience for exhibitors. Using data from the Healthcare Convention and Exhibitors Association (HCEA) and association Web sites, I estimate that many associations attract approximately 30 percent of their membership to annual meetings. Yet how many of these attendees are the professional decision-makers exhibitors want to reach -- warranting your participation in the event?

Reaching key decision-maker attendees ... An e-mail oops! ... Show me the speaker

Hello. I'm Rob Murphy, chief marketing officer for MC².

Participating in a conference or trade show has to produce results, and to do that, you must reach your industry's key players. In this month's feature article, Scott Williams, MC² Chicago division president, details factors that help you determine which events high-caliber decision-makers are most likely to attend, so you get more bang for your buck.

Ever stuck your "electronic foot" in your mouth? See what our readers suggest to do about an embarrassing e-mail. Booking a well-known speaker for an event is quite a coup. But what would you do if the speaker didn't show up? A reader would like to know.

Respond to this dilemma or take our one-minute survey and we'll enter your name into a drawing for a gift certificate for a dinner for two.

"Don't give away plastic bags as a way of promoting your logo and brand. Alternatives are biodegradable bags made from cornstarch, paper, Hessian hemp or calico cotton. Alternatives to bags include thumb drives, CDs and PDFs e-mailed from the show floor."

What’s Your Best Advice?

Last Issue's Dilemma:

How can I save face after replying to all with a bomb of an email?

Last Issue's Dilemma
Every day, I reply to tons of emails from suppliers, co-workers, supervisors, you name it. Recently, I was in a hurry and dashed off a reply-to-all about a suggestion I'd received. I said, "This is crazy! If we pursue this idea we'll never make our deadlines, and it's going to cost a bundle. Whose idea was this anyway?" Well, it was my boss's, and he was one of the "all" who received my message.

Now my gaffe is out there -- companywide. Do I apologize in person? Send another email "to all"? Or what?

This Issue's Dilemma:

How do I keep a no-show from ruining my event?

noshow.gif

My company is scheduled to host a user conference this summer, and when I had lined up a very well-known keynote speaker, I felt like I'd scored a coup. But then, I heard through the grapevine that this particular speaker has bailed out on some other events at the last minute. What can I do to keep this from happening to me? And if I can't prevent it, how can I be sure to get a last-minute replacement at the remote location where the event will be held?
