Mental Drum Roll, Please

Let's hear it for the good, the bad and the downright ugly (experiences, that is)

by eConnections Digest readers

A total eclipse of the electrical system. A loaded truck going up in flames. A style that "bottomed out." The Out-of-Towners revisited. What do these four things have in common? They're just some of the pitfalls and perils that loom on the horizon for event professionals. And they all happened to our readers.

Today, the readers who went through those trials and tribulations can look back and smile at their experiences. You can smile at them too. Maybe you'll even enjoy them more for a very good reason -- none of those things happened to you.

Read on and then cast your vote for your favorite. And if you'd like to share your own heartache or inspiration, send in your story. We may just do another feature article like this in the very near future. Now on with the show!

Editorial Corner

Nobody knows the troubles they've seen ... A chilly work climate ... Getting a count before you're out

Hello. I'm Rob Murphy, chief marketing officer for MC².

This month, we have a very special feature article largely written by some very special people -- our readers. Be sure to check out their tales of tragedy, triumph and more. Then vote for the story you like best.

In last month's dilemma, a reader received a promotion that came with a "little something extra" -- the resentment of her former coworkers who are now her employees. See what your peers think she should do about this situation. Do you know how well you're doing at an event while it's in progress? An events manager would like whatever advice you can provide on getting attendee input before the show is over.

Please let us know how we can make our publication even better and more relevant to you and we'll enter you in a drawing for a video iPod®. Congratulations to this quarter's winner, Regina M. Musetta, senior events manager at Synopsys, Inc.

What’s Your Best Advice?
Last Issue's Dilemma

Last Issue's Dilemma:

What can I do about the icicle dangling from my nose?

Recently I was chosen to be my company's new events manager, and it's gotten quite chilly around here. Two of my team members had also applied for the job. I've heard that they aren't too happy with my promotion and they've been questioning my abilities.

I'm worried that their attitude might affect our success at the events we attend -- and my career. Should I talk to them about this situation? Or ignore them? Or try to find some way to protect myself? Help!

-- Debbie, Events Manager       See what our readers have to say.

This Issue's Dilemma

This Issue's Dilemma:

How do I keep score while the "game" is still going on?

I always tally up how my company's done at an event after it's over, mostly based on the number of visitors and generated sales leads. But I think we could improve our results if I could get input during the event. That way, I could target presentations or make alterations to our exhibit -- according to attendee feedback.

Is the old pencil and paper route OK for this? Or is there some kind of technology I can use to get the information on the fly?

-- Zoe, Events Manager
