Feature StoryThe Science of High Impact Presentations

(Fear of dying less than fear of making presentations!)

by David Kelly, Head of Fulcrum Pharma's Coaching & Development Division

Amazing as it may sound, surveys in the USA and the UK have shown that in both countries more people fear making presentations than fear dying! The UK research was conducted in February 2005 by YouGov using a UK representative sample of 2,000 adults. It discovered that while 50 percent listed public speaking as a top fear, only 28 percent admitted to being afraid of dying. Similar surveys in the USA consistently put fear of making a presentation among the top "phobias" people mention. Read MoreBut as with many fears, the anticipation is often stronger than the reality -- once you face the fear and address it.

So, is there a magic formula for making great presentations? Are strong presenters born with this innate skill? Is "charisma" more important than content? Certainly passion, conviction and enthusiasm in delivery help with how well a message is received. But is that enough?

Overcoming the fear of presentations ... Justifying a budget shortfall ... Private tradeshows

Hello. I'm Rob Murphy, chief marketing officer for MC².

When you're called upon to make a presentation, do your palms begin to sweat as hyperventilation sets in? If so, you're not alone. In fact, public speaking is one of the most common fears among adults. But in this month's feature article, David Kelly, head of Fulcrum Pharma's Coaching & Development Division, explains how to take the fear out of public speaking and make presentations that impress one and all.

Last month, a reader asked how to explain coming up short on her budget due to unexpected circumstances at an event. Our readers give some sage advice. Have you ever organized a private tradeshow for your company? If so, an exhibits manager would like some advice on how to get started and which resources she can use to make the event a success. Your input would be greatly appreciated.

What’s Your Best Advice?
Last Issue's Dilemma

Last Issue's Dilemma:

I followed my ABCs, so how do I justify paying more C-notes?

In response to Bernie Massett's article on being diligent with my planning and service orders prior to a show ... OK, good advice. But last month, I "crossed all my T's and dotted all my I's," and after the show, I still came up short on my budget by 12 percent due to "unexpected circumstances" I was literally unaware of and had no control over. How do I present this shortfall to my superiors without looking inept?

This Issue's Dilemma

This Issue's Dilemma:

How do I make a private tradeshow worth the trade-off in time and money?

My boss recently attended a private tradeshow that was sponsored by one company, and now he wants our company to produce one just like it. He is convinced it will be worth the effort and has given the production responsibility completely to me. I don't know how to begin or where to get started. I don't even know the questions to ask. Where or to whom should I go for help with this kind of event?

-- Judy, Exhibits Manager
