We Need a Hero!

Become the leader your staff and your company deserve

by Ellen De Rosa, Director of Human Resources, MC²

Have you ever met someone and had the immediate sense you were in the presence of a leader? What characteristics did this person have to make you feel that way?

When you think about it, some might have been obvious while others were more subtle, perhaps imperceptible. But you can count on two things: First, all great leaders have certain qualities in common. And second, with some practice on your part, you can become a great leader yourself. Here are pointers on what you need to do.

Becoming a true leader … Love isn't always fun … A David Copperfield wannabe

Hello. I'm Rob Murphy, chief marketing officer for MC².

Whose leadership ability do you admire? Do you wish you could be more like your hero? In this month's feature article, Ellen L. De Rosa, MC²'s director of human resources, explains what it takes to be a great leader. Whether you're a new manager or a seasoned veteran, check out what she has to say -- and find out how to become the person other people admire and respect.

Love is great. But what would you do if two of your team members were "involved?" See what our readers have to say. You have a great employee who disappears whenever a prospect comes to your booth.

Do you bench the employee? Or is there a better way to handle this show no-show? One of our readers would like to know.

Last Issue's Dilemma

Last Issue's Dilemma:

We all know how Romeo and Juliet ended

I have five people on my staff and thankfully they all get along. Unfortunately, it appears that two of them are getting along better than the others. I've heard that they're romantically involved, and I've seen a few signs of this myself.

I'm not against romance, but I wonder what will happen if they break up. Should I speak to the two of them, refer the matter to HR, or close my eyes and just hope for the best?

This Issue's Dilemma

This Issue's Dilemma:

What can I do about an aspiring "David Copperfield?"

My star salesperson always signs up for booth duty but never comes to the pre-show training and cuts out soon as the first hot prospect appears on the horizon. I need her on the show floor. How can I keep her focused? Or should I admit defeat and find someone to take her place?
